United Way of Pasco County Allocates $176,844 from FEMA for Phase 41 of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program Funding

United Way of Pasco County (UWPC) has received $176,844 from FEMA for Phase 41 of the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program (EFSP), which is being allocated to local non-profit organizations in Pasco County. This will enhance efforts in providing shelter, food, and financial supportive services to residents experiencing economic crises.

A Local Board comprising of representatives from social service providers, local government, the faith community, Homeless Coalition, and UWPC reviewed applications and allocated funding based on community needs. Eligible agencies must be 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations in good standing with the Federal Government and capable of delivering services such as served meals, food distribution, mass shelter, other shelter types, rent/mortgage assistance, or utility assistance.

The federal funds from FEMA are designated for natural disasters, emergency situations, and areas with high poverty. EFSP funding can be utilized for food, rent, utilities, and mass shelter. Last year, FEMA, through UWPC, distributed $79,903 in EFSP funding. This year, FEMA significantly increased its distribution to $176,844.

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program was established on March 24, 1983, with the signing of the "Jobs Stimulus Bill," Public Law 98-8, and authorized under the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act (P.L. 100-77). In accordance with the legislation, the National Board encourages Local Boards to place special emphasis on assisting the elderly, families with children, Native Americans, and Veterans.

“Thank you to FEMA for entrusting United Way of Pasco with this responsibility year after year as we continue to make strides in Pasco in supporting all residents in need of basic needs and services,” remarked Charles Anderson, president of United Way of Pasco County, “This will increase the quality of life in Pasco County, as residents will be able to access shelter, food, and utilities.”
